Car care guides

Plain-language guides to the parts of your car

Each guide covers what a part does, how it tells you it is wearing out, and how often to check it. Filter by system to find what you need.

Filter by system

Brakes

Brake pads

What it does
Brake pads press against the rotors to slow and stop your car every time you press the pedal.
Warning signs
Squealing, grinding, a longer stopping distance, or a pulsing pedal usually mean the pads are thin or worn.
Typical interval
Inspect every oil change; replace around 30,000–70,000 miles

Brakes

Brake fluid

What it does
Brake fluid carries the force from your foot to the brakes at each wheel, so the pedal feels firm.
Warning signs
A soft or spongy pedal, dark or dirty fluid, or a brake warning light can point to fluid problems.
Typical interval
Test yearly; replace every 2–3 years

Engine

Spark plugs

What it does
Spark plugs ignite the fuel and air mixture in each cylinder so your engine can run smoothly and efficiently.
Warning signs
Rough idle, hard starting, poor fuel economy, hesitation, or a flashing check engine light can mean worn plugs.
Typical interval
Replace around 30,000–100,000 miles, depending on plug type

Engine

Timing belt

What it does
The timing belt keeps the crankshaft and camshaft turning together so the engine valves open and close at the right time.
Warning signs
Ticking from the front of the engine, oil leaks near the belt cover, or trouble starting can signal a worn belt.
Typical interval
Replace around 60,000–100,000 miles, or by your manual

Cooling & A/C

Coolant

What it does
Coolant carries heat away from the engine and protects the cooling system from freezing, boiling, and corrosion.
Warning signs
A rising temperature gauge, a sweet smell, puddles under the car, or low coolant in the reservoir.
Typical interval
Check monthly; flush every 3–5 years

Cooling & A/C

A/C refrigerant

What it does
Refrigerant moves heat out of the cabin so the air conditioning blows cold on warm days.
Warning signs
Warm air from the vents, weak airflow, strange noises when the A/C starts, or a musty smell inside the car.
Typical interval
Check when cooling weakens; an annual performance check is wise

Electrical

Battery

What it does
The battery supplies the power to start your engine and runs electronics while the engine is off.
Warning signs
Slow cranking, dim lights, a clicking sound when you turn the key, or a battery warning light.
Typical interval
Test yearly; replace around every 3–5 years

Electrical

Alternator

What it does
The alternator recharges the battery and powers the electrical system while the engine is running.
Warning signs
Dimming lights, a battery warning light, a whining noise, or electrical accessories that act strangely or fail.
Typical interval
Test yearly; often lasts 7–10 years

Tires & steering

Tire rotation

What it does
Rotation moves each tire to a new position so all four wear at a similar rate and last longer.
Warning signs
Uneven tread wear, a vibration at highway speed, or more road noise than usual can mean rotation is overdue.
Typical interval
Every 5,000–7,500 miles, or with each oil change

Tires & steering

Wheel alignment

What it does
Alignment sets your wheel angles so the car tracks straight and the tires wear evenly.
Warning signs
The car pulls to one side, the steering wheel sits off-center, or the tires wear on one edge.
Typical interval
Check yearly and after new tires, curb hits, or suspension work

Fluids & filters

Engine oil

What it does
Engine oil lubricates moving parts, reduces friction, and carries heat and dirt away from the engine.
Warning signs
A dark, gritty look, an oil pressure or service light, engine noise, or burning smells under the hood.
Typical interval
Every 5,000–7,500 miles, or per your owner's manual

Fluids & filters

Cabin air filter

What it does
The cabin air filter cleans the air coming through your vents, trapping dust, pollen, and other particles.
Warning signs
Weak airflow from the vents, musty odors, windows that fog easily, or more dust inside the car.
Typical interval
Replace every 12,000–15,000 miles, or once a year
